Murder Movie Club: Murder on a Monday by Marcy Blesy

Title:|Murder Movie Club: Murder on a Monday
Author: Marcy Blesy
Series: Monthly Murder Movie Club Cozy Mystery series #1
Location: Northern Michigan
Characters: Rishard, April, Vicki, Roberta, Yoly, Pamela, Gladys, Junior, Noah, Wally
Pets: a cat named Angela
Rating: 5

Murder Movie Club (Murder on a Monday)” is the first book in the Monthly Murder Movie Club Cozy Mystery series. Having enjoyed another series by this author, I decided to give her new series a try, and I’m really glad I did

The Movie Murder Club is a group of enthusiasts who gather monthly at the Northwoods Movie Theater to watch a murder mystery. They pause the movie halfway through to discuss the plot and each member attempts to solve the mystery. Afterward, they watch the rest of the film to see who guessed correctly. However, this month takes an unexpected turn when a real murder occurs at the theater. The concept of a group of movie buffs solving actual crimes brings a refreshing twist to the genre. The characters are charmingly eccentric, each contributing their unique skills to the mix.

This was an incredibly enjoyable read, which might sound odd given there’s a murder involved, but the characters and their unique traits are simply irresistible.

If you are a fan of cozy mystery, you’ll appreciate this fresh take on the genre. The plot is well-paced, filled with numerous twists and turns to keep you guessing. While the mystery is captivating, it’s the character interactions and relationships that I truly enjoyed.

I received this book from the author as part of her ARC team. This review is my honest opinion.

This book will be released February 21, 2025. Be sure to check it out.

So This Is Christmas by Kay Bratt is the eleventh installment in the Hart’s Ridge series, which is one of my  favorite  series.  Ms. Bratt has a remarkable talent for crafting stories that captivates readers, making it “cannot put down” book.

In this episode, Deputy Taylor Gray is spending a quieter holiday at home, recovering from illness and caring for her newborn daughter. However, the peace is disrupted on Christmas Eve when four bodies are found, leaving two children orphaned. Taylor is deeply conflicted between her wish to please her husband, Sam, who insists she stay out of the investigation, and her strong desire to be involved in solving this horrific crime. She must find a way to assist with the investigation without breaking her promise to Sam.

Amidst all the other events, the Gray family is also dealing with some sisterly drama.

Lesson Plan for Murder by Lori Robbins

Author: Lori Robbins
Title: Lesson Plan for Murder
Series: Master Class #1
Location: Valerian Hills
Main Character: Liz Hopewell
Other Characters: Marcia Deaver. Mr. Pescarelli, Mrs. Donnatella, George, Caroline, Timmy, Bill, Emily, Susan, Detective Brown, Detective Harriman, Ashlee, Rebecca
Starts: 4

Lori Roberts’ Lesson Plan for Murder is a cozy mystery that combines high school drama with the resolve of an amateur detective determined to solve a murder.

The protagonist, English teach Liz Hopewell, finds herself entangled in a murder investigation when she discovers one of her colleagues dead under mysterious circumstances. With her love of solving puzzles, she dives right into the investigation juggling her teaching responsibilities and her sleuthing skills. when two more colleagues are poisoned. Will the deceased woman’s lesson plans point Liz toward the murderer, putting her own safety at risk?

Liz is a likable and relatable character, with just enough imperfections to makes her  appear genuine. Liz’s knack for literary references and sharp humor make her a relatable and entertaining lead. I found it harder to relate to the supporting cast, making it difficult for me to connect with them. Some characters felt more like caricatures than fully developed individuals, which detracted slightly from the story’s emotional depth. The pacing feels uneven at times, with a slow start that picks up midway but occasionally gets bogged down by unnecessary side plots.

Despite these minor flaws, Lesson Plan for Murder is an enjoyable choice for cozy mystery fans who appreciate a clever, snarky heroine and a well-crafted, albeit somewhat predictable, mystery.
